Efficacy of Ion Gel ZCM-25® in the Antimicrobial Treatment Against Acinetobacter baumannii

Background

Acinetobacter baumannii is a pathogenic bacterium responsible for a range of infections, particularly in healthcare settings, and presents significant treatment challenges. The need for effective antimicrobial agents against Acinetobacter baumannii is critical. Ion Gel ZCM-25® represents an innovative antimicrobial topical gel specifically formulated to combat such pathogens, offering potential benefits in infection control and wound healing.

Objective

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the Ion Gel ZCM-25® against the Acinetobacter baumannii BAA-1790™ strain, following the standards outlined in the Mexican Standard NMX-BB-040-SCFI-1999 for germicidal product evaluation. The study underscores the gel's role as a topical antimicrobial solution in preventing infections and promoting skin health.

Methods

A quantitative antimicrobial assay was conducted using a defined inoculum concentration of Acinetobacter baumannii, applied to a 100 g sample of Ion Gel ZCM-25®. The gel’s efficacy was quantified by calculating the percentage reduction in bacterial load, measured in Colony Forming Units per milliliter (CFU/mL), at specified time intervals (30 seconds, 60 seconds, and 10 minutes) post-application. This process highlights the rapid action of this antimicrobial topical gel in reducing bacterial presence.

Results

The application of Ion Gel ZCM-25® demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against Acinetobacter baumannii. The bacterial load was reduced by 87.0% within the first 30 seconds, escalating to a 93.0% reduction by the 60-second mark and peaking at 93.5% after 10 minutes of exposure. These results indicate a sustained antimicrobial effect, reinforcing its suitability for infection prevention and wound healing.

Conclusion

Ion Gel ZCM-25® exhibits potent antimicrobial properties against Acinetobacter baumannii, highlighting its potential as an effective topical antimicrobial agent in healthcare settings and broader clinical applications. Its ability to provide fast-acting infection control and support wound healing makes it a valuable option for managing hospital-acquired infections and other bacterial threats.
